Key

Is there a way to divine my product key from my system? I must have lost the e-mail with the key in it and I am thinking of running Vista on a new PC. I thought they allowed 10 (?) activations from one key?
Thanks

Open your browser, type in 'google' in the address bar. After the Google page opens, type in 'key finder' in the search field and then either press the <Enter> key or left click on the "Google Search" button.

I know of no way of diviing the key. My favorite, Key Finder (Magical Jelly Bean), is not supported in Vista. http://www.magicaljellybean.com/kfbeta.shtml
It is not 10 activations with the same key, but activation on 10 machines using the same key. Re-activation is not counted a second time against the 10.

Didn't you try KF on your own Vista machine before answering? It' not like its a big effort to try it out.

It should show up near the bottom of the Welcome Center.

You should be able to see it down near the bottom of the Welcome Center.

That is the Product ID (PID). The OP wants to figure out his Product Key used at installation time. If you compare your Product Key that you got from MS with the PID you'll quickly see the difference. The confusion is easy because they both start with "Product".

That just gives the Product ID, not the actual key.

Forget that last suggestion. I should have looked first. It's the Product ID with an option to change the Product Key. I tried Belarc Advisor (www.belarc.com) but it can't get the Vista key.

Excellent little tool. System Information on massive steroids.
Look under the column "Software" Look for "Secrets"
You probably won't have very many items listed when using this in Vista, so you should right away see "Windows Key".
In XP, It lists *lots* of "secrets". Passwords to online sites, email, and keys to other programs.

SIW - System Information for Windows. This program perform computer configuration analysis and diagnostics. It gives detailed information about your computer properties and settings, detailed specs for CPU, motherboard, chipset, BIOS, CPU, PCI/AGP, USB and ISA/PnP devices, memory, monitor, video card, disk drives, CD/DVD devices, SCSI devices, S.M.A.R.T., ports, network cards, printers, operating system, installed programs and hotfixes, processes, services, serial numbers (CD keys), users, open files, system uptime, network, network shares, as well as real-time monitors for CPU, memory, page file usage and network traffic. It displays currently active network connections, passwords hidden behind asterisks, installed codecs, and more. This program also creates a report file, and is able to run in batch mode. A standalone tool that does not require installation - one less installed program on your PC as well the fact that you can run the program directly from a USB flash drive.
Platform:
Microsoft Windows 98/Me/NT4/2000/XP/Server 2003/Media Center/Tablet PC/Windows 2003 Server R2/Windows Server 2003 x64/Windows XP x64/Vista

Oh, it's free and works on Vista.
Also, the email passwords that it shows are from web-based email when copied by Auto-Complete.
It is a stand-alone program- no installation required.
Like
I said, a great utility to have around.

SIW on my Vista x64 runs but "Secrets" scans and returns an empty report. Other items in the tree pane do return correct lists. Odd that everything else functions except Secrets.

SIW does return the key on my Vista x86 so hopefully the OP is using x86.

Yes there is!
The old stand-by AIDA32 pulls thru again. I just installed it on my Vista Beta machine and it gave me my PK for Windows Vista.
Go to http://aumha.org/free.htm and DL AIDA32 from left column. Go to Software and then Licenses to see what you need for results.
